Dr. Olshaker is a Doctor of Medicine with nearly 40 years of experience in medical care as a practicing physician and academic. For nearly two decades, Dr. Olshaker was Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Boston Medical Center (BMC), the largest Level One trauma center in New England, while serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). Dr. Olshaker was co-founder of the Boston Medical Center Injury Prevention Center (BMCIPC) and served on the Board of Directors for the center and the Boards of Boston Medical Center’s Management Service Organization; Insurance Company, LTD (BMC’s self-insurance company); and BMC Accountable Care Organization.

Prior to his positions at BMC and BUSM, Dr. Olshaker was Director of Emergency Medicine for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Baltimore as well as Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Training program and Attending Physician in the emergency department of the University of Maryland Hospital. A veteran of the Navy, Dr. Olshaker also spent several years in military service providing medical care at Naval Hospital Oakland (also known as the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital), U.S.S. Niagara Falls (AFS-3), and Naval Medical Center San Diego. Dr. Olshaker has the distinct honor of retiring from military service as a Captain of the United States Naval Reserve.

Recently appointed Professor Emeritus at BUSM, Dr. Olshaker has previously held faculty appointments at BUSM, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University School of Health Sciences and the University of California-San Diego. Dr. Olshaker has authored or co-authored over twenty-five book chapters, sixty peer-reviewed journal articles and over twenty abstracts. In addition, he has given more than fifty invited lectureships. Dr. Olshaker is on the editorial board for the American Journal of Emergency Medicine; the Journal of Emergency Medicine; and the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine. In addition, he is the senior editor of the textbook, Forensic Emergency Medicine, co-editor of the textbook Geriatric Emergency Medicine and co-editor of multiple editions of The Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America including two editions on Risk Management.

Dr. Olshaker has received multiple awards including the National Defense Services Medal from the United States Armed Forces; Physician of the Year Award from the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians (MACEP); and the Leadership Award from the department of emergency medicine at the University of Maryland. In addition, Dr. Olshaker has been honored with the creation of the Jonathan S. Olshaker, MD Visiting Lectureship in Emergency Medicine at BUSM.

Dr. Olshaker is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FAAEM) and has received certifications from the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Olshaker is also a member of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine and the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine.
